Martha Sundquist Obituary- Death: The community of Tennessee and many across the United States are mourning the loss of Martha Sundquist, who passed away peacefully on March 11, 2026, in Collierville, Tennessee, at the age of 88. Known for her kindness, humility, and dedication to public service, Sundquist left a lasting impact on the people and communities she served.

Martha Carolyn Swanson Sundquist was born on October 10, 1937, in Joliet, Illinois, and grew up in Lemont, a close-knit community where she built lifelong friendships. She later attended Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois, graduating in 1959. It was during her college years that she met the love of her life, Don Sundquist, whom she married the same year.

From 1995 to 2003, Martha Sundquist served as the First Lady of Tennessee while her husband governed the state. During this time, she became widely respected for her advocacy and involvement in initiatives that supported children, education, and environmental conservation. Her passion for nature and beautification led her to promote projects such as wildflower planting along interstate highways and support for parks and public spaces.

Her love for Tennessee’s natural beauty was recognized through the naming of the Martha Sundquist State Forest, a tribute to her dedication to conservation and appreciation of the state’s landscapes.

Beyond her public role, Martha Sundquist was known as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother—affectionately called “MorMor”—and friend. She and her husband raised their three children, Tania Williamson, Andrea Jeannet, and Deke Sundquist, while living in several Tennessee communities including Memphis, Nashville, and Townsend.

In her personal life, she enjoyed gardening, hiking, golf, puzzles, and traveling. Family members described her as someone who filled her days with meaningful activities and maintained a warm, welcoming spirit throughout her life

A funeral service honoring Martha Sundquist’s life will be held on March 21, 2026, at Tuckaleechee United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM, with interment immediately afterward.

Martha Sundquist will be remembered not only as the wife of a governor but as a compassionate leader and community advocate who served Tennessee with grace. Her legacy lives on through her family, her community work, and the many lives she touched throughout her lifetime.
