Gasoline Truck Explosion on I-471 Shuts Down Highway Near Memorial Parkway: A massive explosion involving a gasoline tanker truck caused major disruptions Friday night along Interstate 471, after a crash beneath Memorial Parkway led to a fiery blast that forced authorities to shut down the roadway in both directions.
According to Newport Fire Chief, the incident occurred when a truck carrying approximately 8,300 gallons of gasoline collided with another vehicle in the southbound lane of Interstate 471 underneath Memorial Parkway. Following the crash, the fuel tanker caught fire and exploded, creating a large fireball that could be seen from a distance and quickly drew emergency crews to the scene.
Witnesses in the area reported seeing flames and thick smoke rising from the highway shortly after the collision. Video footage shared by Eugene Hamblin captured the dramatic moment of the explosion and the intense fire that followed the crash.
Emergency responders rushed to the location to control the blaze and secure the surrounding area. Officials confirmed that a couple of people were transported from the scene for medical treatment, though the severity of their injuries has not yet been publicly disclosed.
Authorities also confirmed that no firefighters were injured during the response. However, due to safety concerns and the potential damage caused by the explosion, officials shut down both northbound and southbound lanes of Interstate 471 as well as nearby sections of Memorial Parkway while engineers and inspectors evaluate the structural safety of the roadway and overpass.
The closure is expected to remain in place until officials determine that the infrastructure is safe for motorists. Drivers in the area are advised to seek alternate routes while crews continue cleanup and safety inspections.
The dramatic explosion has drawn significant attention on social media, as residents react to the shocking crash and share videos from the scene. Authorities say the investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing.
