Mother of Teen Found Dead in Walmart Oven Shares Heartbreaking Discovery

Mother of Teen Found Dead in Walmart Oven Shares Heartbreaking Discovery: A grieving mother has spoken publicly about the devastating moment she discovered her 19-year-old daughter dead inside a commercial bakery oven at a Walmart store in Halifax. The tragedy, which occurred in October 2024, continues to raise questions as the family searches for answers.

Mandip Kaur, who worked at the same Walmart location as her daughter, said she became concerned when she could not reach 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur during her shift in the store’s bakery. On October 19, 2024, Mandip went to check on her daughter inside the bakery area — a decision that led to a horrifying discovery.

“I opened the door and she was there,” Mandip said while recalling the painful moment earlier this week. Overcome with shock and grief, the devastated mother said she collapsed on the floor beside her daughter, unsure of what had happened.

Mandip described seeing a dark, tar-like liquid leaking from the large walk-in commercial oven used to bake frozen bread. The ovens can reach temperatures of up to 400 degrees. According to reports, Gursimran’s body was discovered next to baking racks and had been burned beyond recognition.

Following the tragic death, the Walmart store in Halifax was closed for approximately four months while investigations took place. During that time, community members left flowers and tributes outside the store to honor the young employee.

When the location eventually reopened, significant changes had been made. The bakery department had been relocated to another part of the store, and the large walk-in ovens were replaced with smaller units that employees cannot physically enter. It remains unclear whether larger ovens are still used in areas not accessible to customers.

The case was initially investigated by the Halifax Regional Police as a possible homicide. However, roughly a month later, authorities concluded that the death was not suspicious.

A separate investigation by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration also determined that there were no workplace safety violations that contributed to the tragedy. Officials stated that the oven involved could be opened from the inside and investigators found no evidence that occupational health and safety rules had been broken.

As a result, the investigation cleared Walmart of wrongdoing.

Despite the official findings, the exact circumstances surrounding Gursimran’s death remain unknown. Some speculation online suggested the possibility of suicide — an idea her mother strongly rejects.

Mandip said her daughter was happy and had big plans for the future. Gursimran had reportedly been the valedictorian of her class and hoped to attend university to study medicine and eventually become a doctor.

According to her mother, the family had spent the evening before her death celebrating together and enjoying time as a family.

“Does she look depressed? She was so happy,” Mandip said.

She also noted that shortly after her daughter’s death, the family received a package that Gursimran had recently ordered, something her mother believes shows she was planning ahead and looking forward to the future.

Mandip described her daughter as a typical teenager who loved music, makeup, and shopping. She also shared a close relationship with her 12-year-old brother.

Nearly 18 months after the tragedy, the family says they still do not know exactly what happened inside the bakery that night.

“After 18 months of investigation they are unable to discover what happened,” Mandip said. “They couldn’t find any solid thing. They don’t know. They don’t have any proof. No solid results.”

As the investigation remains unresolved, the family continues to seek clarity about the tragic death of the promising young woman.
