Hughes was transported by Hall County Fire Rescue to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigators say the incident began after a group of teenagers went to Hughes’ home and covered trees on his property with toilet paper in what authorities described as a prank. When Hughes came outside in response, the group got into vehicles to leave. During the ensuing moments, Hughes tripped and fell into the roadway and was struck by a pickup truck driven by 18‑year‑old Jayden Ryan Wallace of Gainesville. Wallace was later charged with first‑degree vehicular homicide and reckless driving, as well as criminal trespass and littering related to the prank. Four others present at the scene — all 18 and residents of Gainesville — were also arrested on misdemeanor charges of criminal trespass and littering.
